Negative taken of Scipio A. Jones in a studio, probably in the 1890s. Scipio A. Jones was born August 7, 1868 in Dallas County, Arkansas and died March 28, 1943 in Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas. He received his education at Philander Smith College in Little Rock and in 1887 completed the normal course at Bethel University (now Shorter College) in Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas. He taught in the public schools for two years while he read law and was admitted to practice in the Circuit Courts in June 1889. In 1893, he was admitted to practice in the Federal Courts and in 1895, the United States Supreme Court. He practiced law for more than 50 years in Little Rock and Arkansas. Jones was recognized throughout the nation as a leader of his race. He was a delegate to the 1940 national convention of the Republican Party and a member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church at Ninth and Broadway Streets in Little Rock for more than 50 years.
